Loss of landline telephones

In a recent letter to the EDP (03/09/22) our Green councillor, Eleanor Laming, raised concerns regarding analogue telephones being disconnected by the end of 2025. As a society, we are becoming ever more reliant on technology and technology powered by electricity. In the event of a long-term power cut, we could lose the ability to communicate using the internet and mobile phone coverage. The current landline service is able to continue operating due to battery back up at telephone exchanges. With the possibility of energy shortages and the impacts of climate change, we should be questioning our over-reliance on modern technology and a constant electricity supply.

At a presentation on "Better Broadband for Norfolk" at a Broadland District Council Overview & Scrutiny Committee (06/09/22), Green councillor Jan Davis asked for additional information and reassurance on proposed battery back up for particularly vulnerable premises and individuals. This is especially important for isolated rural communities.
