Post-election developments at Broadland District Council

Broadland Green Party would like to provide an update on the current position regarding Broadland District Council following the 4th May local election.

Broadland District Council is now in No Overall Control (NOC) in which no single political party has won a majority of seats. The political make up is: Greens (4), Labour (8), Liberal Democrats (14), Conservatives (21).

In some councils in no overall control, the largest party can form an alliance with another party. The Greens will not be forming an alliance with the Conservatives, and we cannot see the Lib Dems and Labour doing that either.

That leaves the Liberal Democrats to form some kind of alliance or coalition with Labour and potentially the Greens.

Labour has announced they will be holding a meeting on Saturday 13th May to select their Group Leader and so we hope to understand how they are thinking soon after that.

We look forward to speaking with the Lib Dems and Labour in the next few days.

Finally, we were invited to a meeting of Group Leaders from both South Norfolk and Broadland Councils and, like the Lib Dems and Labour, we declined the meeting as we do not support a merger of the two councils.
