Broadland Green Party response to the Budget

Most people will not have benefitted from this budget. They will not feel better, healthier, or happier. This government appears incapable of new ideas to improve the wellbeing of society or its citizens.

Councils are under pressure up and down the country. NHS waiting lists get no better, NHS dentists are not available. Social care is on its knees. Bus transport is insufficient and rail travel far too expensive.

Most workers have experienced a real-terms wage freeze and the tax cuts announced will do nothing to reverse the decade long slide. Workers earning up to £19k pa will be losers because of the freezing of tax thresholds.

There is a huge and widening inequality in this country. Wealth is distributed unfairly. Rather than our wealth circulating and benefiting everybody, it is held in stagnant assets of the very wealthy.

We needed a Budget that released the money available through a wealth tax to invest in the green jobs of the future, in a nationwide insulation and retrofit programme, to cut the NHS waiting lists, invest in social care, and restore nature and our living and working environment.

This budget and this government have failed the majority. It’s time for a General Election to vote Green for a fairer, healthier, and more caring country.
