Decline of birds – Letter in EDP

Letter published in the Eastern Daily Press, Monday 29 January on the decline of bird species (text below).

Dear Sir

The RSPB ran their successful yearly Big Garden Birdwatch from 26-28 January.  It is 45 years since this began and it is now the largest citizen wildlife survey in the UK. Sadly this has shown a yearly decline in many species of birds, including farmland birds.   In January the government provided updated information on the new Environmental Land Management schemes which aim to improve the agricultural environment.  Funding and options for farmers to work in a more nature-friendly way have been increased, but more detail and support is needed for these to be truly successful.   Plans to protect hedgerows, soil and water courses need to be continued. Only then will we see the commitment to reverse the loss of biodiversity realised.

Kind Regards
Eleanor Laming
