Question about letter sent out by MP on Norwich Western Link

Letter published on 31/1/24 in the Norwich Evening News following letter sent to residents by Broadland MP

Dear Sir

A number of constituents in Broadland recently received an unsolicited letter from the local MP outlining his support for, and arguments in favour of the construction of the Norwich Western Link road. This was delivered on House of Commons stationery which is funded by the taxpayer.  It seems to me that there is a question over how appropriate this was. There is a fine line between political campaigning and informing residents of a situation, and I suspect the balance in this case has tilted in favour of political campaigning.  The letter has come at a time of heightened sensitivity as Norfolk County Council prepare to consider the planning application for the road and a general election is very likely to be held this year, so I do have concerns.

Kind Regards, Eleanor Laming
